Gobi-Eco-system (GES) Information System to motivate reliable business relation for Gobi eco-system
There is increased public awareness of nature conservation and the environment in Mongolia, which started with individual rural community efforts in several aimags and then broadened to nationwide movements. People are not against mining, but are aware of the need to protect nature and the environment.
The general objective of this project proposal is to strengthen the business relations between communities, public and private sectors for the protection of the eco-system in themining areas of the Gobi region, through developing and providing a shared information system.
The GES Information system will be designed, developed, evaluated in participatory manner that captures traditional and scientific knowledge and provides tools for mapping and group work. For this purpose, the local stakeholders will be trained through three on-site workshops, facilitated by a series of activities grouped into 3 phases, and be motivated according to their contribution.
Use of the developed information system will improve transparency, create common understanding of the causes of the environmental problems and promote consensus among local government, the mining private sector and grassroots communities for mitigation and resolution of conflicts.
Opportunities for participation in the development process and open access to the information system will assist in empowering indigenous people to adapt to changes that encroach on their traditional lifestyles in a more knowledgeable and managed way.
The alpha version of the GES information system will be delivered to the local government and secondary school of the Nomgon soum of Umnugobi (South Gobi) aimag.
